Drum Circle
The drum is the oldest communal instrument on earth, and something in the human nervous system still recognises it, responding to rhythm the way the body responds to a heartbeat. A drum circle is a facilitated group experience in which participants play together using hand drums and percussion, guided through rhythms that build gradually into something that feels less like performance and more like collective release. No musical experience is needed. Rhythmic entrainment, the physiological process by which the body synchronises to an external beat, has been shown to reduce cortisol, quiet the analytical mind and produce states of relaxed, present-moment awareness. A drum circle works particularly well for groups who need to move something, teams rebuilding trust, communities processing change, or individuals who have spent too long in their heads and need to find their way back into their bodies.
